After the initial visit to this beautiful home, I established the homeowner’s aspirational style through thorough discussions and pin pointing a number of key pieces of traditional furniture and artwork already in their home. The aim was to give the design a slightly more contemporary edge while maintaining the elegant traditional feel of their home, so I focused on accentuating the beautiful architectural details in the room while juxtaposing them against sputnik inspired lighting and furniture.
After presenting studies of the layers of blue that occur when ink is in dropped in water, the colour palette was born. A contemporary approach of layering shades of blue- deep navy, royal blue, smoky grey and frost white became the basis of the design.
The home owners were looking for this room to function in two separate ways- one side as a cosy warm snug with abundant seating for the whole family to gather together in the evenings and the other as a more open, bright peaceful day room for playing music, reading and space for the children to scatter toys. So we positioned the ‘snug’ to the rear of the space and the ‘reading room’ to the front.
Brass and smoked glass jewel like chandeliers hang delicately in each of the spaces, casting atmospheric light across the heritage ceiling roses above. A black antennae wall light stretches out across a sun filled bay window and lightly hangs above a traditional charcoal velvet button holed chaise longue. An elegant antique fireplace is treated in a modern way by colour blocking it in blue along with the chimney breast.
All of these details are beautiful, but a favourite feature of mine is the modern theatrical storm cloud artwork in a traditional gold antique frame positioned within Georgian inspired blue blocked wall panelling, bathed in light from a modern black double armed floor light. Encapsulating the heritage contemporary theme perfectly.
